Tangles

The best way to avoid tangles is to look after the hair, so that the outer cuticle (protective layer) of each strand remains intact, allowing the hairs to slide past each other easily. However, some types of hair are more prone to tangles than others, such as curly hair, and of course as children play their hair inevitably works into knots.

Children often hate having their hair detangled, so a little and often approach is best to prevent bigger knots, or even matts, from forming. Using a good detangling spray certainly helps. Plaiting long hair is a good way to prevent tangling when children are doing something particularly active. Protecting the hair with a hat in strong sun will help to prevent it becoming dehydrated, and hence more likely to tangle. For this reason, wearing a hat whilst swimming is recommended, and always shampoo and condition thoroughly after contact with chlorinated or sea water.

Always detangle long hair prior to washing, and do not pile it on top of the head whilst shampooing. The old advice of ‘100 strokes a day’ should not be followed, brush or comb only as much as needed to detangle or style. If hair bands are used, elastic ones must be avoided, as they can tear the hair; fabric covered is best.

Philip Kingsley Moisture Balancing Conditioner has excellent detangling properties that make it the perfect conditioner for use on children.
